3-4-2-1 Formation

Often called "the Christmas tree" — a back three, a flat midfield four, and two players in the hole behind a lone striker.

What it is

The 3-4-2-1 fields a back three, a flat midfield four for width and control, and two attacking midfielders operating just behind a single central striker. The tapering shape from back to front gives it its nickname.

Player positions

  • Goalkeeper: Plays behind a back three, often involved early in building attacks.
  • Centre-backs (CB): Three defenders share coverage, with the two outer centre-backs shifting wide when needed.
  • Wide midfielders (LM/RM): Supply most of the team's width from a flat midfield four.
  • Central midfielders (CM): Two players control tempo and connect defense to the attacking midfielders ahead.
  • Attacking midfielders (CAM): A pair operating in the pockets either side of the striker, combining to create chances.
  • Striker (ST): The point of the shape, often dropping deep to link with the two attacking midfielders behind.

Strengths

Overloads the space just behind the opposition's midfield line with two creative players, while the back three and midfield four provide defensive stability underneath them.

Weaknesses

The lone striker can be isolated against two centre-backs if the attacking midfielders don't join quickly enough, and space between the midfield four and attacking pair can open up if not managed carefully.

Attacking behavior

The two attacking midfielders interchange with the striker and look to exploit the space between opposition lines, while wide midfielders provide width and late runs into the box.

Defensive behavior

The midfield four sits in front of the back three, with the two attacking midfielders often the first to press when possession is lost.

When to use it

Choose the 3-4-2-1 when you have two creative attacking midfielders who thrive in pockets of space and a striker comfortable linking play rather than staying purely on the shoulder of the last defender.
